Names with Meaning

Each piece of Worn Wisdom jewelry is named after a woman in Scripture. These women have stories like ours—woven with both challenges and faith. They learned to rely on God in their circumstances, and their lives continue to remind us and teach us today.

Abigail

Abigail's story can be found in 1 Samuel 25. She was described as discerning and beautiful. She was first married to Nabal who was known to be unpleasant. When Nabal got into a scrape with David, Abigail rushed in with grace and diplomacy to save Nabal and her household from harm. When Nabal suddenly died, David remembered Abigail's valiance, and the two were married.

Anna

You can read about Anna in Luke 2:36-38. While Mary and Joseph came to bring the baby Jesus to the temple to present him to the Lord, they encountered Anna, a prophetess who had lived and worshipped in the temple for decades. She saw Jesus and immediately knew that he was the Savior of the world. She told of this encounter to all she met who were also waiting for their Savior to arrive.

Apphia

Apphia is mentioned as part of those greeted by Paul in the book of Philemon. Likely the wife of Philemon, she played a role in the formation and continuation of the early church.

Candace

Candace is a title, rather than a name. The title for the Ethiopian queen, is mentioned in Acts 8:27. Phillip encounters a eunuch employed as the treasurer of the queen. After spending time together, the eunuch decides to be baptized, and then goes on his way.

Chloe

Chloe is mentioned in 1 Corinthians 1:11. A group, referred to as her people, reported to Paul about the serious divisions within the local Corinthian church at the time. This group cared deeply for the health and unity of the body of believers, enough to take action to address it.

Claudia was a member of the early Christian church, referred to in 2 Timothy 4:21. She was a friend to both Paul and Timothy.

Deborah

You can read Deborah's gripping story in Judges 4 and 5. She was a prophetess and judge in Israel during a time of great fear and oppression. After prophesying that military leader Barak would lead the Israelites into battle over their oppressors, he agrees to move forward with the plan, but only if Deborah rides into battle with him.

Elizabeth

Elizabeth's story begins in Luke 1, where we learn that despite being faithful to God and his commands for her long life, she and her husband Zechariah do not have the children they desire. God blesses them to eventually have a child and Elizabeth gets pregnant, shortly before her cousin, Mary, also finds herself pregnant. Elizabeth's baby, the cousin of Jesus, is John the Baptist.

Esther

Esther is one of two women to have books of the Bible named after them. Esther becomes queen of Persia and uses her influence to bring justice for the Jewish people, who face persecution.

Eunice

Eunice is known for being the mother of Timothy. Timothy was a young leader in the first century church. In 2 Timothy 1:5, Paul lifts up Eunice's faithfulness to God throughout her life as a prominent influence in Timothy's spiritual formation.

Eve

Eve's harrowing story can be found in Genesis 1-3. The first ever woman, Eve knew what it meant to know God intimately and personally. After giving in to the influence of the serpent in the garden, Eve and her husband Adam's disobedience led to the separation of God and humanity.

Hannah

Hannah's story is found in 1 Samuel 1-2. She was desperate to have a child, and so took to the temple to pray fervently. In her prayer she promised God that if he gave her a child, she would dedicate the child to the Lord. Soon she gave birth to the prophet Samuel, and did just that.

Jael

Jael, whose story can be found in Judges 4-5, is known for being cunning and faithful to God's will. When the leader of the Canaanite army goes on the run after being defeated in battle with the Israelites, he comes to Jael's family's tent. Despite also being Canaanite, Jael acted against the oppression the Canaanites exercised over the Israelites. To fulfill God's will, Jael put an end to the oppression (and the army leader) with a tent peg and hammer.

Joanna

Joanna's story is peppered through the book of Luke. She was a devout follower of Jesus and supporter of his ministry. She was part of a group of women who supported Jesus and the disciples throughout their ministry, and she was present with Jesus during his crucifixion, burial, and was among the first to learn about his resurrection.

Julia

Julia is mentioned in Romans 16:15, among those to whom Paul sent his greetings. Presumably, she was a member of the early Roman church.

Leah

Leah's story can be found throughout Genesis 27-30. Her father schemed to have her marry Jacob, despite Jacob wanting to marry her sister instead. Leah found herself in a marriage where she received no love, a circumstance that only got worse when Jacob finally got to also marry Leah's sister. Leah lived a life of being mistreated by those closest to her, but God blessed her regardless.

Martha

Retellings of Martha's interactions with Jesus are found in both the books of John and Luke. Martha was a woman who cared deeply about her work and the people around her. Her desire to do things with excellence sometimes took her away from being in the moment with Jesus. She was also a person who didn't shy away from sharing her honest thoughts and questions with Jesus.

Mary

Several women in the New Testament shared the name Mary. All of these women had the joy and privilege of playing important roles in the ministry of Jesus and the early church. Among those were Jesus' mother, Mary of Bethany who sat at Jesus' feet, Mary Magdalene, and others.

Miriam

Miriam was the older sister of Moses, and her story can be found throughout Exodus and Numbers. She was instrumental in saving Moses' life when he was a baby, and later aided him throughout his calling to set the Israelites free from slavery in Egypt.

Priscilla

Priscilla and her husband, Aquila, worked together to support Paul in his ministry in Corinth. They were tentmakers, and were hospitable to Paul and others in the early ministry of the church. You can learn more about Priscilla in Acts 18 and 1 Corinthians 16.

Rachel

Rachel's story can be found through Genesis 27-30. She and Jacob fell in love, but by some conniving from her father, Jacob married Rachel's sister instead. She would finally be allowed to marry Jacob seven years later. Despite Jacob and Rachel's great love for one another, their journey of having children was a difficult one. Rachel's story was one of experiencing the difficultly of waiting.

Rhoda

Rhoda's joyful story can be found in Acts 12:12-17. Rhoda was a servant girl who was the first to encounter Peter after he was miraculously released from prison. After Peter knocked on the door asking to be let in, Rhoda got so excited, she left him on the doorstep and went to go tell the other apostles that he was there. They didn't believe her at first, until Peter continued knocking, and was finally let in.

Ruth

Ruth is one of two books in the Bible named after women. She was originally from Moab, but later moved to Isreal with her mother-in-law, Naomi, after the deaths of her husband, brother-in-law, and father-in-law. She faced discrimination after moving. Staying faithful to Naomi, Ruth married Naomi's close relative, Boaz, allowing her to take care of the family and continue on Naomi's family line. This family line would eventually lead to the births of both David and Jesus.
